An Analysis of the Synchrotron Spectrum in the Fanaro - RileyType I Galaxy 3
نویسنده
چکیده
We studied the evolution of relativistic electrons in the Fanaroo-Riley Type I (FR I) galaxy 3C449, by observing with the VLA at three frequencies (330, 1445 and 4835 MHz) and in all 4 conngurations for a primary resolution of 3."6. The conventional model for this type of source is that the relativistic electrons are accelerated in the core and subsequently lose energy as the jet ows outward, expands and bends downstream. We nd that 3C449 is more complicated than that with evidence for a diierent type of structure, more reminiscent of higher luminosity FR II galaxies. We introduce a new analysis tool-the spectral tomography gallery-and nd evidence for two spectral components that we label the \\at jet" and the \sheath". The at jet remains fairly well collimated throughout the inner 5 arcminutes, with the sheath accounting for most of the observed widening. The at jet shows little steepening with distance from the core. However, the sheath has a steeper spectral index than the jet. If the same spectral shape is appropriate for both components, there may be an evolutionary connection between the particles in the at jet and those in the sheath. Another possibility is that the sheath has a steeper injection index than the at jet. This may mean that the sheath and at jet are separate electron populations. In either case, the standard aging analyses would give incorrect answers because of confusion between the separate spectral components.

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملStatistics of Galactic Synchrotron and Dust Foregrounds: Spectra, Pdfs and Higher-order Moments
We present statistical analysis of diffuse Galactic synchrotron emission and polarized thermal emission from dust. Both Galactic synchrotron emission and polarized thermal emission from dust reflect statistics of magnetic field fluctuations and, therefore, Galactic turbulence. We mainly focus on the relation between observed angular spectra and underlying turbulence statistics. Our major findin...
متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

baryonic matter distribution in the large-scale structures is one of the main questions in cosmology. This distribution can provide valuable information regarding the processes of galaxy formation and evolution. On the other hand, the missing baryon problem is still under debate. One of the most important cosmological structures for studying the rate and the distribution of the baryons is gal...
